Escape

European art de vivre, made doable: one town, one lake, one train line at a time, with only the places worth the trip.

We travel the way we cook: fewer, better choices, each with a reason, and a plan you can actually follow.

Escape covers France, Switzerland and Italy through what you eat, where you walk, what you bring home and what you recreate at home. Every story is seasonal and practical: travel times, opening days, booking tips and a Make it doable box.

We name hotels and restaurants only once we have stayed or eaten there.

The Story

The Palais de l’Isle, a stone fortress on an islet in the Thiou canal, at dusk, with lit quays and their reflections.
Escape · The Weekend Ledger

Annecy, Unhurried

Forty-eight hours on a clear Alpine lake: canals before breakfast, a boat across the water, a flat shoreline ride and the view from the Col de la Forclaz at sundown.

Coming soon to Escape

A note from the editors

Arrive the evening before. The first morning in a new town is the best one, and it is wasted on a train.

  1. The Slow Line: Geneva to Montreux

    Coming soon

The lake-side train, which side to sit on and one stop worth getting off for.

  2. A Region at the Table: Savoie

    Coming soon

Two mountain dishes made doable, and a pantry box of five regional products.

  3. The Quiet Corner

    Coming soon

One small place, never the next hot spot, and how to be a good guest there.
